An introduction to Complex Symptoms

Research Scholarship Scheme 2010 - Applications for funding

Applications are now invited for the CECo Scholarship Scheme. The purpose of the scheme is to attract clinical researchers to supportive and palliative care research and to give them the support they need to become successful researchers. The scheme is aimed at clinicians from nursing, the professions allied to medicine, other non-medical practitioners and medical practitioners. Funding will be provided to support applicants for up to three months (full time) or for a longer period (part time) to enable them to work with CECo researchers to develop their research skills and submit one of the following:
  1. an application for a research grant
  2. an application for a PhD fellowship and/or
  3. a substantial research-related paper directed at a peer-reviewed journal

CECo is a collaboration between researchers at Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham and Southampton universities, and the scholarship must therefore be held at one of these universities.

TWO research scholarships are initially available.

What are the essential criteria for an application?

You must demonstrate in your application:
  • A strong interest in research in supportive or palliative care
  • How your research ideas link to one or more of the three CECo research themes
  • Support from a mentor active within CECo to ensure your development (we can help put you in touch with suitable people)
  • Support of your manager (if applicable)

Who is it aimed at?

Applicants who would wish to develop their role in SuPaC research.

How much funding is available?

A maximum of £10,000 is available for up to 3 months (full time – flexible arrangements will also be considered). It can be used to cover your salary or to provide backfill to allow you time to focus on working with CECo researchers to develop your research skills and to develop your grant/fellowship application and/or substantial research-related paper.

How to apply?

  • Complete the application form found under the Resources link to the left of this page, (also available on request by emailing Gunn Grande at gunn.grande@manchester.ac.uk), together with a letter of support from your line manager (if applicable), a one-page CV, record of publications and work plan for the period of the scholarship. The letter of support from your line manager should include confirmation that you will have guaranteed, protected time to work on the Scholarship for the full amount of hours specified in your work plan
  • Return to Gunn Grande, Reader in Palliative Care, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work, University of Manchester, Jean McFarlane Building, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL by 26th February 2010

Afterwards

  • Successful applicants should submit their application for an external grant/fellowship funding and/or research-related paper within 6 months, and provide a copy to the CECo Capacity Building Group
